1.5 On A Number Line
Representing Decimals on Number Line
Representing decimals on number line shows the intervals betwixt 2 integers which will assistance us to increase the basic concept on germination of decimal numbers.
1. Correspond the post-obit decimals 0.nine, -1.3, -0.6 and i.1 on a number line.
Since, 0.9 = 9/10, -1.three = -13/10, -0.6 = -6/ten and one.1 = 11/10
Divide the infinite betwixt every pair of consecutive integers (on the number line) in 10 equal parts. Each function so obtained will represent the fraction 1/x i.e., decimal 0.ane and the number line obtained volition be of the form:
To mark 0.ix; move 9 parts on the correct-side of zero.
To marking -1.3; motion 13 parts on the left-side of cipher.
To mark -0.half dozen; move half-dozen parts on the left-side of zero.
To mark 1.1; move eleven parts on the right-side of zero.
The following diagram shows markings of decimals 0.nine, -ane.3, -0.half-dozen and ane.ane on a number line.
two. Represent the decimals: 0.iii, 0.7, -0.four and -1.2 on a number line.
Since, 0.iii = iii/10, 0.7 = 7/10, -0.four = -4/10 and -i.two = -12/10
Dissever the space between every pair of consecutive integers (on the number line) in 10 equal parts. Each role then obtained will correspond the fraction 1/x i.east., decimal 0.1 and the number line obtained will be of the form:
To marker 0.3; motility three parts on the right-side of zero.
To marking 0.7; motility 7 parts on the right-side of nada.
To mark -0.iv; motion four parts on the left-side of cypher.
To marker -one.2; move twelve parts on the left-side of zero.
The following diagram shows markings of decimals 0.3, 0.seven, -0.4 and -1.2 on a number line.
3. Draw a number line to stand for decimals: 0.75, ane.l and -one.25
Since, 0.75 = 75/100, i.50 = 150/100 and -1.25 = -125/100
Divide the space betwixt every pair of sequent integers (on the number line) in 4 equal parts. Each office so obtained will stand for the fraction 1/25 i.e., decimal 0.25 and the number line obtained will be of the form:
To mark 0.75; move 3 parts on the right-side of zero.
To mark ane.fifty; move six parts on the right-side of zippo.
To mark -1.25; motion v parts on the left-side of nil.
The following diagram shows markings of decimals 0.75, 1.50 and -1.25 on a number line.
Thus, nosotros have learnt how to represent and draw any decimal points on the number line.
